Por que este Clube

O que vamos discutir juntas.

Why participate?

In a first-of-its-kind effort,‘Counting Feminicide: Data Feminism in Action’ documents the creative, intellectual, and emotional labor of data activists across the Americas as they seek to fill the institutional gap in counting femicides and gender-related killings. One of the main arguments of this book is that it is not computer scientists, think tanks, philosophers, critical data studies scholars, engineers or policy people who are developing the most sophisticated approached to the ethical use of data for public benefit, but rather grassroots feminist data activists, predominantly from Latin America, who are at the forefront of data ethics in the service of justice.

Who is this Book and Movie Club for?

Academics, activists, journalists, policymakers, planners, and citizens who care about:
  1. Gender-related violence and the role that feminist movements and grassroots initiatives are playing in addressing it with data, especially in Latin America.

  2. How data, data visualization and AI can be used for social justice. The book critiques conventional data science practices to demonstrate how feminicide data activists are enacting a data ethics that centers care, memory, healing and structural change. This approach is called “restorative/transformative data science”.

How Does it Work?

Our book club will enable participants to delve into the care, memory and justice work conducted by grassroots data activists to shed light on feminicide by meeting with the author and discussing the book with the Eureka community over the course of 3 months. We’ll help you to keep pace with the reading, and facilitate safe spaces for discussion.

Who is Behind this Project?

The book is authored by Catherine D’Ignazio, director of the Data + Feminism Lab at MIT and co-author, with Lauren F. Klein, of the widely praised ‘Data Feminism’ (2020), a book that described the seven principles of data feminism, and which are put into action and embodied by the data activists featured in ‘Counting Feminicide’.
